My work is concerned with the expression in watercolour of atmosphere and light. Whilst the images appear loose and spontaneous there is a firm sense of draughtsmanship underlying the composition. I have been helped in this by an earlier career as an architect. I like to draw straight onto the paper with a brush. This image is used as a guide and eventually disappears under the layers of watercolour washes. I paint mostly in and around my home town of Rye but love to travel mostly in Europe where I collect reference material for later studio work.
