Gio Cuison
The subject in the paintings are people Gio has known for a number of years and frequently visited for their respective business. They are all painted based on familiarity. He tries to depict them in the most earnest way with a limited palette and sombre colours as he feels this evokes the true nature of their work, humble and unglamorous but dignified. The composition is strongly influenced by photography and he uses different objects in the foreground and side to lead the viewer's eye into the painting.
Gio's paintings capture social events that touch on professions which may become obsolete in the future. The works of Velasquez, Courbet, Degas, Manet, and 15th century Florentine Painters has impacted his work. From each artist he tries to assimilate different ideas through composition, drawing, colour and subject matter.
